SAN DIEGO — Catholics seeking inspiration at the local cinema are in luck.
A series of faith-based films will be in theaters for limited engagements in coming months, courtesy of Fathom Entertainment, including at local AMC and Regal locations.
“American Martyr: The Stanley Rother Story” will be in theaters Aug. 25 and 26 in English (narrated by Martin Sheen) and Aug. 27 in Spanish (dubbed; narrated by Father Rafael Capó). The documentary film recounts the story of Blessed Stanley Rother, a missionary priest from Oklahoma who was martyred 45 years ago during the Guatemalan Civil War.
“The Passion of the Christ,” director Mel Gibson’s 2004 film about the final hours of Jesus’ life, will return to theaters Sept. 10 to 17. As a bonus, moviegoers will get a sneak peek at Gibson’s follow-up film, “The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One,” which is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 6, 2027; “Part Two” is set to follow on May 25, 2028.
“Heaven in Stone and Glass,” a documentary hosted by Bishop Robert Barron of the Diocese of Winona-Rochester, Minnesota, and founder of Word on Fire Catholic Ministries, will be in theaters Sept. 20 and 23. Word on Fire describes the film as a “cinematic pilgrimage through France’s Gothic cathedrals to recover sacred mysteries written in rose windows, winding labyrinths and soaring towers.”
“Adore Him: He Is Here,” in theaters Oct. 4 to 8, is a docudrama about Eucharistic adoration from the executive producer of 2024’s “Jesus Thirsts: The Miracle of the Eucharist.” According to its website, “‘Adore Him’ is a documentary film exploring what happens when Catholics rediscover the gift waiting for them in every tabernacle. Through stories of conversion, healing and renewed faith, it makes the case for what the Church has always known: that time spent before the Blessed Sacrament changes everything.”
