NEW YORK — Twenty-four children from Catholic schools and parish religious education programs nationwide, including one from the Diocese of San Diego, are winners in the Missionary Childhood Association’s (MCA) annual Christmas Artwork Contest.

This year’s grand-prize winners were a student in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and a student in the Diocese of Fort Worth, Texas.

Drake Danao, a sixth-grader at St. Pius X School in Chula Vista, was among the 24 national winners. His artwork depicts an angel proclaiming to a shepherd the good news of Jesus’ birth.

“Children understand the Gospel in a wonderful, pure and direct way,” said MCA National Director Alixandra Holden, explaining how the contest helps form the missionary heart of young Catholics.

“In this Jubilee of Hope,” she said, “their creativity reminds all of us that mission begins with a heart turned toward Christ and open to the world.”
