RANCHO PENASQUITOS — The Oaxaca Education Fund will host a 5K walk fundraiser on Saturday, Feb. 28, that begins at Canyonside Park (12350 Black Mountain Road, San Diego 92129) and goes into the Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. There is a suggested donation of $20; children under age 14 walk for free.
The Oaxaca Education Fund developed out of a ministry to migrant workers that began in 1985 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish. For years, parishioners and the men who worked in the fields between Peñasquitos and Del Mar shared faith and built relationships.
For the last 14 years, the fund has helped the families of these migrant workers keep their kids in school in Mexico. Its volunteers carry love and support from San Diego into the pueblos of Oaxaca, where they deliver school supplies to about 1,500 students in five villages.
Throughout the year, the fund provides food stipends that ensure support for 50 orphans and disabled children. Its scholarships are currently helping 17 college students stay on the path to graduation and a career; 28 young people have graduated from college with the fund’s help.
