SAN DIEGO — Casa de los Pobres in Tijuana, run by the Franciscan sisters, provides the basics to the poorest families in the region. The Casa is asking for donations of school supplies and funds to help prepare children to attend school.

The organization is once more asking for the following items to be dropped off at the office of Our Lady of Refugee Parish in Pacific Beach. The parish will accept donations until Aug. 11 and then again from Aug. 24 through September. The office is open Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Please enter the parking lot and office from Oliver Street. The office phone number (858) 274-9670.

School supplies needed:
-Backpacks (new)
-Spiral notebooks (wide ruled)
-Composition notebooks
-Notebook filler paper
-Colored construction paper packs
-3-ring binders
-Loose-leaf paper
-Blank paper
-Writing utensils: Pencils (sharpened with erasers), pencil bags, pens, erasers, washable markers, highlighters, colored pencils, crayons
-School scissors
-Glue sticks
-Rulers
-Insulated lunch boxes
-Reusable water bottles

In addition, the Casa hopes to raise enough funds to give away 500 pairs of shoes to children, as it has done annually. The price of the shoes has gone up this year, however. The sisters are struggling to meet their goal, according to the Casa’s director, Sister Armida Andrade. A pair costs an average of $25.

Individuals may donate funds online to buy the shoes or school supplies through this page, or may send a check to Casa de los Pobres USA, P.O. Box 9596, San Diego, CA 92169. The check should be made out to Casa de los Pobres USA. More information is available through email at CasadelosPobresUSA@gmail.com.

The permanent deacons of the Diocese of San Diego, in collaboration with Catholic Charities, support Casa de los Pobres. The deacons organize the annual Million Meal Event, which draws faithful from across the region to pack meals every summer to be distributed to the poorest families the Casa serves.
