EL CENTRO — Young adults in the Imperial Valley recently had an encounter with the crucified Christ.

Members of that region’s young adult Catholic community attended a presentation on Tuesday, April 15, on the Shroud of Turin, which many believe to be the burial shroud of Jesus Christ.

Held in the gymnasium at St. Mary Parish in El Centro, the presentation — a second of which was scheduled for 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 16 — was part of the traveling “Man of the Shroud Exhibit.”

The free exhibit, which is being hosted by local parishes, in collaboration with JP2 Catholic Radio, has been at St. Mary’s Parish from April 13 to 16. It is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

The exhibit features 41 life-size panels that explore the historical context and scientific studies of the Shroud of Turin. Visitors experience an immersive display, including authentic artifacts related to the Shroud, a full-size replica of the Shroud, and a life-size statue of Christ in a state of rigor mortis, reflecting the suffering depicted in the Shroud’s image.

The “Man of the Shroud Exhibit” was previously held March 25 to 27 at Sacred Heart Parish, Brawley; March 28 to 29 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, Ramona; March 29 to April 6 at St. Gabriel Parish, Poway; and April 7 to 10 at St. Michael Parish, Poway.

Local Catholics can next experience it at Our Lady of the Rosary Parish in Little Italy, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., May 6 to 8. There will be a presentation at 6:30 p.m., May 7.
