SAN DIEGO — The diocese’s first-ever Grandparents’ Day Retreat was a hit.

A total of 75 grandparents from across the region, including many couples, turned out for the half-day event on July 23 at the diocesan Pastoral Center. The theme was, “The gift of your spiritual wisdom.”

The participants shared experiences about the blessings and challenges they face as grandparents. And they heard speakers, including Sandra Adsit, from St. Michael Parish in Poway; Deacon Chris Hulburt, from St. Brigid Parish; and Janet and Joe Bartel, from Mission San Diego de Alcalá.

After listening to each speaker, the participants had an opportunity to reflect at their tables on what had been said. Some were new grandparents while others were long-time ones.

The event concluded with a Mass celebrated by Father “Chuck” Fuld, a widower and a grandparent himself.
