Mass to pray for Asians on April 15

SAN DIEGO – San Diego Bishop Robert McElroy invites all faithful to a special Mass on April 15 to pray with and for the Asian and Pacific Islander community at a time its members are enduring  harassment and attacks across the country.

The Mass will be held on the eve of the one-month anniversary of the shootings in Atlanta that left eight people dead, including six Asian American women. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, there’s been a spike in anti-Asian assaults that have shaken members of that community.

One organization, Stop AAPI Hate, said it received more than 2,800 firsthand reports of verbal and physical assaults against Asians from March 19 and Dec. 31 of last year, according to National Public Radio.

The diocese’s evening Mass will be held at Good Shepherd Parish, 8200 Gold Coast Drive, in Mira Mesa, and also will be livestreamed at sdcatholic.org/asiansolidarity.
