Holy Week Observances with Cardinal, Auxiliary Bishop

SAN DIEGO — Holy Week, April 2 to 9, the final week of Lent, is the most important week in the Catholic faith. It begins on Palm Sunday and ends on Holy Saturday, when the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus begins after sundown with the Easter Vigil Mass.

All parishes hold special observances on Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday. Cardinal Robert W. McElroy and Auxiliary Bishop Ramón Bejarano will lead some of these observances at two parishes in San Diego.

-Thursday, 7 p.m., St. Joseph Cathedral, Mass of the Lord’s Supper, celebrated by Cardinal McElroy.

Thursday, 7 p.m., Holy Family Church, Mass of the Lord’s Supper, celebrated by Auxiliary Bishop Bejarano.

-Good Friday Walk with the Suffering, 8:30 a.m., beginning at San Diego Rescue Mission; with Bishop Bejarano and representatives from organizations that support the most vulnerable.

-Good Friday Pro-Life Stations of the Cross, noon, procession to the federal building on Broadway begins on the east side of St. Joseph Cathedral; Auxiliary Bishop Bejarano leads hundreds through downtown streets.

-Good Friday, 3 p.m., St. Joseph Cathedral, Celebration of the Lord’s Passion, liturgy with Cardinal McElroy.

-Good Friday, 3 p.m., Holy Family Church, Celebration of the Lord’s Passion, liturgy with Bishop Bejarano.

-Easter Vigil, 8 p.m., Good Shepherd Church, Cardinal McElroy celebrates a Mass that begins in candlelight and includes many Scriptural readings that trace the story of salvation from the Creation accounts in the Book of Genesis to the resurrection of Jesus.  Those who had been preparing for months to enter the Catholic Church also receive the sacraments of initiation during the vigil — baptism, First Communion and confirmation.

Easter Vigil, 8 p.m., Holy Family Church, Bishop Bejarano celebrates the Mass.

Easter Sunday, all parishes celebrate Masses commemorating the Resurrection.
