SAN DIEGO — The diocese’s annual Filipino holiday tradition of Simbang Gabi will begin with a special vigil Mass to be celebrated by Cardinal Robert W. McElroy on Dec. 14 at 6:30 p.m. at St. Gregory the Great Church.

Simbang Gabi (Filipino for “Night Masses”) is a novena of Masses to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary as she awaits the birth of her Son. The evening will begin with a procession of “parols,” colorful star-shaped lanterns, that remind the faithful that Jesus is the “Light of the World.” Afterward, there will be the recitation of the rosary, followed by the Mass by candlelight.

Beginning Dec. 15, Simbang Gabi services will be held in parishes across the diocese at varying times. The schedule follows. More information is available at sdcatholic.org/simbanggabi2022.
