SAN DIEGO – The Diocese of San Diego is hosting a free workshop in Spanish, “Domestic Violence: Prevention and Healing,” featuring a psychologist specializing in the subject.
Ricardo Márquez, associate director of the diocesan Office for Family Life and Spirituality, which is organizing the event, said many consider the subject even taboo to discuss. That’s why it’s important to have an opportunity to learn about such violence and strategies to help its victims and their families.
The workshop is targeted to parish leaders to give them tools to accompany families facing domestic violence, as well as anyone interested in learning about the issue.
“We want them to be aware of the warning signs and give them proven ways to respond,” he said.
The workshop will be led by Dr. Christauria Welland, a bilingual psychologist in private practice specializing in family therapy and the treatment of violence. She also has written several publications, including “How do we help to end violence in Catholic families? A guide for clergy, religious and laity.”
The workshop will be held on Monday, Aug. 5, from 6-8:30 p.m., at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, 1770 Kearney Ave., San Diego 92113. Registration is encouraged; email rmarquez@sdcatholic.org.
