Supporting the Annual Catholic Appeal

By Bishop Robert H. Brom

Each year, generous response to the Annual Catholic Appeal by Catholics throughout the Diocese of San Diego demonstrates that “Our Life Is Mission.”

Diocesan receipts from the 2010 Annual Catholic Appeal in the amount of $3 million will be used for the following purposes:

Catholic Charities

Catholic Charities is the primary social service agency of the diocese. It assists approximately one million people each year by providing a network of very important programs and services.

Priestly and Religious Vocations

To accomplish our mission, we continue to need dedicated priests and religious. Money is well spent in promoting vocations to the priesthood and religious life and in the formation of candidates.

Parishes and Schools in Need

Some of our parishes and parochial schools struggle financially and need our assistance to provide basic facilities and programs.

Marriage and Family Life

Contemporary society poses fundamental challenges to the meaning, purpose and value of marriage and family life. We have made it a priority to provide good programs of preparation for marriage and for marriage/family enrichment.

Youth and Young Adults

We are attempting to offset the negative influences which bombard our youth and young adults today by fostering efforts and offering programs which will promote their human and spiritual growth and development.

Religious Education

Time, talent and treasure are needed to offer culturally sensitive evangelization and systematic catechesis to all Catholics, whether children, youth or adults, and to reach out to those interested in becoming Catholics.

Response to the Annual Catholic Appeal can be made with a single contribution or with a pledge that can be paid over the course of a year. Donation envelopes available at all parishes may be used, or contributions can be made by going to the diocesan Web site, www.diocese-sdiego.org, and selecting the “Gift Giving” tab.

This year, once again, all funds received in excess of the parish assessment may be used as a parish determines.

In this time of economic anxiety and financial insecurity, families are being forced to make hard decisions about spending, saving and which worthy causes to support. As we enter this Lenten season of prayer, fasting and charity, I invite you to embrace the mission of our Local Church with support for the 2010 Annual Catholic Appeal.
