The Southern Cross is the newspaper of the Catholic Diocese of San Diego.![]() Founded in 1912 as an independent Catholic publication, it became the official diocesan newspaper in April 1937, at the request of San Diego’s first bishop, Charles F. Buddy. The 24-page print edition of The Southern Cross is published on the third Wednesday of each month. It includes a mixture of diocesan, national and international reporting, providing both a local and global perspective on Church news. Each issue also includes media reviews and insightful commentary by nationally-syndicated Catholic columnists. Through both its print edition and its Internet presence, The Southern Cross assists the Local Church in its teaching and pastoral mission by: informing the faithful about the life and work of the Church throughout the diocese; offering news and information which will foster unity with the Church throughout the world; and instructing the faithful regarding authentic Catholic teaching and practice.
